Bought for taking night shots, which is basically useless. if you're aiming for night skies, just use film. Digital becomes very noisy, fast.
Otherwise, 30 seconds is plenty long exposure for whatever you're going to use. Tripod/2 second timer does well to avoid shake. It's also very, very short.
Basically, if you need some kind of remote, use a remote.
